Safety first of all
December 1, 2017 - March 31, 2018
This project is part of the broader project funded by the British Embassy in Belgrade “Countering Violent Extremism and Radicalization Threats in Serbia through Community-Based Early Warning and Preventive Engagement”. The latter is aimed at establishing and consolidating a foundation for efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism and radicalization that can lead to terrorism (VERLT) in Serbia. Preventing and countering VERLT is recognized as a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach in the global fight against terrorism to which the Government of Serbia is committed. The project encompasses three themes of research, in specific: support to community policing/municipal safety councils (MSCs), intercultural education and civic participation and engagement (civic education).
This specific project, implemented by the selected implementation partner (Roma Association for Women and Children, “Daje”), supports early engagement by citizens in the establishment of the MSC; notably the implementing partner has a speciality in addressing issues of concern to Roma women and children, who are often the victims of anti-social behaviour by hooligans and extremist groups. The partner will carry out a risk assessment and security evaluation in 4 Roma settlements in the municipality, one of Belgrade’s largest. Eight meetings will be held with decision makers from the municipality emphasizing the role of citizens – and particularly women and families – in local safety issues. The partner will print and distribute leaflets indicating the importance of the Municipality Safety Council (MSC); a very relevant action as the MSC is in the early stages of establishment, and this will help to ensure that citizens are engaged in activities from the start.
