IISG meeting with Migration, Asylum, Refugees Regional Initiative (MARRI), Skopje 02 December 2021

Thursday, 02 December, 2021

As part of the consultation process with IISG members on the development of the Needs Mapping report, the IISG Secretariat held a bilateral meeting with the MARRI Regional Centre in Skopje with the aim of discussing the comments on the Pillar 3 – WBBSi.

MARRI commented that border security is a wide field with many sectors, which requires many experts to overlook it and to deliver analytical responses on the needs. It complimented the IISG Secretariat job which synthesized filtered needs which were translated into the four charts on the regional needs.

Considerations from MARRI on visa regime were illustrated with a few situations that WB Partners can experience. MARRI commented that in some cases the visa regime policy doesn’t necessarily match the EU acquis on visa regime. The IISG Secretariat explained that the asylum and visa regime are two directions on the border security pillar that are considered only on the law enforcement segment which doesn’t include other relevant institutions and organizations.

The EC Progress Reports 2021 assess objectively and rationally what are WB partner needs, before the background of the EU Acquis. For this reason, MARRI advised that during the national consultations it is necessary to review the EC Progress Reports regarding recommendations, as they refer to needs;

MARRI remains one of the most active partners under the WBBSi pillar and emphasised its commitment in regards to the IISG process.
